International English Language Testing System

Overview:
Students aiming to study in top-most universities and aiming for working or immigrating to the English Speaking Nations need to clear International English Language Testing System (IELTS). An English proficiency test for non- native English speakers that enables study, interactions in those nations. World's most popular English language proficiency test since 37 years is administered by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment.

IELTS is a paper- based test and has two segments i.e. IELTS Academic and IELTS General. The purpose of both is different and the one to take depend upon the requirements of the institute you plan to study in or your work and immigration requirements.
  1. IELTS Academic is for students aspiring for Higher Education in countries with English as the medium of instruction in classrooms. Also professions like medical, nursing, engineering, etc. IELTS Academic results are required.
  2. IELTS General is for the ones applying for visa as permanent residency in English Speaking countries intended to test skills needed for communication in workplace and everyday environment.
Academic and General segments have similar Listening and Speaking components and different Reading and Writing component. IELTS is divided into four sections:
  1. Listening:
    Test is 30 mins and 10 mins to transfer the answers in answer sheets.
  2. Reading:
    Test is 60 mins with reading passages in 3 sections with tasks.
    • For General- short factual texts and long texts on general topic,
    • For Academic- descriptive, analytical, factual texts, diagrams, graphs, journals, newspapers.
  3. Writing:
    Test is 60 mins with 2 tasks
    • For General- Writing of letter of 150 words and short essay of 250 words
    • For Academic- Writing of 150 words describing tables, charts, graphs, diagrams. And writing short essay of 250 words.
  4. Speaking:
    Test is of 11-14 mins in Face-to-Face interview speaking on familiar topics and discussions.
  • A student does not fail in IELTS, instead scores on a band scale of 0-9 according to the proficiency of the candidate.
  • Each country, organization, institute needs different band requirements.
  • The IELTS test results have validity of two years you will be required to retake beyond this period.
